Deep Dive Session Title: Next Practices Can Take Us Where Best Practices Can’t
Presenter: Eric McDermott, CFP® ChFC® CLU®
Location: Sun Ballroom A

We have long been an industry of sharing “Best Practices.” Across the country, industry study groups exchange best practices. It’s been a hallmark of our culture and it has served us extremely well – until now. Best Practices, by their very nature, are refinements to what already exists so that we can function more efficiently.

When Netflix had its wildly successful DVD mail subscription service, what refinement to their existing business DVD mail subscription model could have ever led to the global streaming juggernaut they are today? None. If they had only focused on best practices for refining their DVD mailing subscriptions, they never would have been future ready.

In our industry, as an example, a best practice in helping new people build a career in our industry used to be the Project 100. That is, until it stopped working. So, the new “best practice” became Project 200, a refinement to what already existed. This is true in countless areas of our profession and industry. Simply ask yourself, do you find you are working harder than ever to get less and less of the outcomes you used to or want? Best practices alone will not be enough.

To become future ready, we need to introduce Next Practices. Yes, there’s still a place for best practices, though we need to also begin cultivating a culture of Next Practices! How do we do this? Join Eric McDermott, a General Agent and Managing Equity Partner of GAMA Master Agency, Pacific Advisors, for his main platform presentation on Next Practices. Eric will share what Next Practices are and why we need them. From there, roll up your sleeves and join him in the Deep Dive session where Eric will share the taxonomy of Next Practices and provide actionable insights for how to use them to become future ready!

Our panel of experts will share their thoughts of change from 3 different viewpoints.  From a Distribution Leader’s view, from Field Leader’s viewpoint and from a Sales Rep’s perspective.

Their ides,  best practices and lessons learned will help you lead and navigate your team through the constant change that our industry is experiencing.

Workshop Session Title: The Mechanics of Motivation
Presenter: Seth Preus
Location: Sanibel

When managers clearly understand the nature and mechanics of motivation, they have a far greater capacity to influence their teams than they ever realized. You cannot create motivation, but you can influence it. I will show you why it is a mistake for companies to rely solely upon extrinsic motivators (money) while ignoring intrinsic motivators that are more effective, enduring, and impactful. Most, but not all, of your team can be inspired to improve. I will identify and describe the 4 types of sales people as well as which of them can and cannot be motivated. Real-time production data is the foundation for any motivational framework. I will explain how you can use data to drive motivation and identify specific KPI’s that will lay the foundation for sustained success. I will demonstrate how to create and run more effective sales competitions that will continue to reward top performers, while also motivating the rest of the team. We will walk through 3 strategies for setting up effective competitions that motivate your entire team to perform at a greater level while also improving morale and communication.

Early Frontline Excellence Award, and the international recipients of the GAMA Leadership Awards.

Induction into the GAMA International Management Hall of Fame is the highest honor given by the financial services industry to recognize an individual field leader whose professional career has been spent building a field organization and serving the industry. The prestigious award is presented to one individual annually.

GAMA created the First in Class Award in 2000 to recognize first-line leaders in the insurance, investment, and financial services industry who have led their agencies or firms to the number one position in their company during the preceding year. Recipients are nominated by their home offices and companies are urged to nominate field leaders who excel as leaders in both their careers and their communities.

The Frontline Excellence Award, which debuted in 2010, recognizes field leaders who have shown exemplary performance in their current frontline positions and are considered to be emerging leaders in their companies. The award is named after the late Brian Early of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, an especially active GAMA member who had a powerful passion for helping emerging leaders grow and develop.

GAMA International is a global organization and the GAMA Leadership Awards program recognizes international firms, agencies, and individuals for their excellence throughout the insurance, investment, and financial services industry. GAMA International chapter enthusiasm is at an all-time high as international members take a moment to recognize the work and dedication of colleagues around the globe.

Technology allows us and our clients access to information, but we, the advisor, need a way to initiate action for the client on a relatable level. In this presentation,
I will share how to create authentic relationships with clients and to stand apart from ‘internet information overload’ by avoiding over-complication and effectively relaying value propositions.

I will show exactly how I built a multi-million dollar practice by harnessing my relationships and using the internet (social media) to my advantage, as well as how your
advisors can achieve the same. I will teach advisors how to connect with clients using stories and transitioning from being a “salesperson” to a “facilitator,” which will allow for more favorable outcomes with clients. They will leave with language, process, and tips they can apply to their practice.
