As a 19-year old, Katie learned to cold-call insurance prospects under the tutelage of top advisors at a local firm, who had observed her natural talent for sales. While she put herself through school, Katie went from a support position to agent, sales manager and recruiting director. What fueled Katie’s fast ascent through the agency ranks were her drive, work ethic and resilience. Those qualities were rooted in overcoming a difficult childhood, and having to fully support herself as a young adolescent.
Step-by-step Katie’s journey took her from the field to the home office. Regional recruiting efforts grew national in scope, and she found herself responsible for national recruiting initiatives as a Program Director at MetLife. When MassMutual acquired MetLife in 2018, Katie was asked to head Field Recruiting Support.
Katie recognizes that having earned “a black belt in recruiting” from the “field up,” gives her a unique vantage point; her experience allows her to see how the company will stay ahead in the recruiting space. Low national unemployment coupled with relatively high entry-level salaries and educational debt loads make entrepreneurship a difficult first step for many inexperienced candidates. Even so, Katie sees tremendous opportunity in attracting the next generation of advisors from a wide range of niche markets, but also points out “the old way of drawing people in no longer works.”
“In the past, we focused heavily on the financial upside of the business, to the exclusion of everything else,” she explains. “Today we know that, among many things, a clear career path, having a voice, transparency and teaming all align with values that are key to the modern candidate.” Katie believes that continuing to be innovative and driving change in the face of challenge will help MassMutual differentiate itself in today’s marketplace.
Outside of work, Katie is a big animal lover: she takes care of bulldogs, a cat, a rabbit and some goats. She lives with her husband, Chad, and their two daughters in rural Connecticut, on a large plot of land which she dreams of one day converting into a farm rescue animal sanctuary.
